Beat Police from Beth and Richard Hunter on Vimeo Karaoke is a big part of the entertainment scene in Singapore. Some people use it as an excuse to go out pubbing, others just like to sing. "KTV" means that there are rooms for hire, where your party can select songs from a book, key some reference numbers into a device like a remote control, and have the songs play on a hi-fi. The lyrics come up on a TV screen to make it easier to sing along with the music. Many KTV lounges, and all Karaoke pubs, also have an open bar area where you can really make a fool of yourself in public (that's where I always go).
It all began around January
I was passing a sign that said "KTV"
Looked inside this little bar
Saw a girl performing like a Broadway star
Singing the words from a TV screen
She was moving around like a dancing queen
I was drawn inside before I could think
So it all began with a little drink
Sing it to me
Sing it to me
Sing it to me dear
Sing it to me honey
Sing it in my ear
Sing it to me
Sing it to me
Sing it to me now
Sing it to me sunshine
Sing it somehow
There were butterflies made my tummy flip
As I wrote a number on a paper slip
I sipped a beer as I sat my turn
And looked around, see what I could learn
Everybody so professional
Until it was my song they called
But halfway through I heard a scream
"It's the Beat Police, you better leave this scene"
[Chorus]
We are the Beat Police
And you're wanted for a crime
The fact is that you're out of key
And you're also out of time
We are the Beat Police
And we're gonna put you away
The charge is murder
Another good song died today
Sing it to me, etc.
I walked to a hill and started to climb
Went straight up for a considerable time
Came back down on the other side
I saw a car and so I hitched a ride
Got out in a place twenty miles away
Noticed straight off, they got Karaoke
Went into a bar and requested a song
But before I could finish, guess who came along?
I signed a note, confessed to everything
Seems they just don't like the way I sing
