The Lion City is Singapore, and this song contains many observations made during my first couple of years here. SPGs are Sarong Party Girls, people really did watch football while dancing, and some groups like to form long parallel lines on the dance floor and cha cha cha to all types of music. So far, I still haven't worked out why.

Hot sun and a summer sweat
Your body's tired and your clothes are wet
Cool breeze from a shopping mall
You climb the stairs like you're gonna fall

Inside you look around
Same old things you already found
Salesman in your face
But you feel like you already bought half the place

Shopping in the lion city
Burned by the sun and drowned by the rain
Shopping in the lion city
You better have fun or you're gonna get caned!

Hotel room's like an icy cave
This aircon's gonna put you in an early grave
There ain't no way to turn it down
So you rest a while and then head into town

Drinking down a Tiger beer
The band begins to check their gear
Starts off slow but by ten o'clock
The faders are up, and they're starting to rock

Rocking in the lion city
SPGs drive a man insane
Rocking in the lion city
You better have fun or you're gonna get caned!

They watch football on TV from the dance floor
The band plays on as the Lions roar
The song they hear's Whiskey In The Jar
But they're standing in lines going
One Two Cha-Cha-Cha
One Two Cha-Cha-Cha

Rocking in the lion city
Feelings that just can't be restrained
Rocking in the lion city
You better have fun or you're gonna get caned!

Rocking in the lion city
Just one more bittersweet refrain
Rocking in the lion city
You better have fun or you're gonna get caned!
